FIRE broke out on a cable ship being repaired at the Keppel Batangas shipyard in the municipality of Bauan in Batangas province, Philippines at around 10.30 am on Wednesday.
Bureau of Fire Protection officials said the Wave Venture, a cable laying and multipurpose offshore vessel owned and operated by the London-based Global Marine System, was damaged by fire while drydocked at the yard.
Initial investigations indicated that the fire started in the engine room where hot works was being carried out. Officials said sparks from a welding machine may have set fire to the newly painted walls of the engine room.

The cost of the damage has yet to be determined.
Keppel Batangas is one of three shipyards operated by Keppel Philippines Marine Inc in the Philippines. The other shipyards are Keppel Cebu and the Subic Shipyard and Engineering Inc.
